What is LIFE?
What are WE?
WHY………are we here?
Science asks, ‘How are we here’?
Religion asks, ‘Why are we here’?
This is where my questioning of reality began.
Let me tell you a story. For anyone that knows me they would have probably heard this story before. It begins a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
Actually that’s not true. It happened when I was at school at around the age of 13 or 14. Which was a long time ago but not really that far away. Better stop this before Disney sue me, and if I’m getting sued by Disney it’s not going to be over the use of a line from Star Wars. It will be because I’ve exposed them as per…….well it doesn’t matter why. There’s many reasons, we’ll come back to that another day.
Where was I? School, yes, right. So, when I was 13 or 14 ish the way my school structured it’s lessons were Assembly first thing in the morning followed by a one hour lesson. Then we had a 15 minute break followed by another one hour lesson. Then it was lunch followed two one hour lessons to end the day.
With these two lessons in the afternoon you would sit through one and then go straight to your last lesson of the day. It’s these afternoon sessions that got me thinking. You see, I would have R.E. after lunch. That’s Religious Education which was compulsory as a lesson. Even though I have no Religious background, beliefs or faith in the subject.
But, never the less I sat there with the other kids whilst an expert told us how God created the heavens and the earth and the people and the animals and the plants and so on and we would have to write about what we had learned.
My next lesson, directly after R.E. was Physics! Another compulsory lesson that for an hour solid, an expert would tell me and the other kids that the Big Bang created the heavens and the earth and the people and the animals and the plants and so on and so on.
Well as you can imagine, I would sit in R.E. and I would question everything the teacher told me. It didn’t make any sense to me. I would then cross the hall to my Physics lesson and do the same. How can the Big Bang just ‘Happen’ from nothing and create everything. I would use religion against science and use science against religion. Had these two teachers never met each other and had a chat? What the hell am I supposed to believe.
My mind was firmly in the corridor. I was stuck between these two lessons that contradicted each other but because I was a kid, I had to take the teachings of both experts as ‘Correct’!! I couldn’t help thinking, what if there’s a third way. A third option. What if both of these teachers were wrong. Neither seemed to have enough evidence that was conclusive enough to be the definitive answer. The R.E. teacher was probably a UFO chaser on the weekends whilst the Physics teacher went to church on Sundays?? Who knows?
I’ve rambled on a bit here but I’m just trying to make the point that you are given 2 choices in this life. Science or Religion. If you question these subjects as a kid in school, you’re a trouble maker. If you question them when you are older you are an idiot. Yet picking one of these contradicting idea’s is acceptable. This sounds to me like there could be some kind of cover up, conspiracy, a plan to keep us away from trying to understand there may be a third option, that we may be something ‘Other’. Something greater, something higher, a third option that stops you being imprisoned by the system that has been created to keep you quiet.
Right, I’ve gone a bit dark here. Let’s get back to the idea that we could be way more amazing than any of you could have ever imagined.
I want to try and keep this as simple as possible so you can read this and be opened minded enough to at least ask yourself a few questions. First things first, let’s dismiss the two idea’s that are forced upon us.
- RELIGION
If you don’t believe in God you can chill for a minute, doesn’t concern you. We can rule out religion as the creator of this existence due to many things but the one that gets me is the fact that there is more than one religion. There’s no evidence that God exists. There’s no evidence that he came down to earth in the image of himself, (Jesus) and had an argument with the Romans. There’s no evidence that Noah built the ARK. There’s no evidence to support Moses ever existed. There’s no evidence to support the commandment tablets or the Ark of the Covenant which allegedly houses them today. If you’re not religious you may not know this. The ten commandments were inscribed on two stone tablets. These are the rules of life that God told Moses we had to follow. They got broken and were put into this solid gold chest and are now housed in some form of church type building in Ethiopia. But you can’t see them! You are not allowed to see the Ark or it’s contents. They’re not invisible, you’re just not allowed to see them. They are guarded and are much too powerful for mere mortals like ourselves to observe.
All religious relics, so antiques from Jesus times have never been found. The spear of destiny, the cup of Christ, the alleged cross he was crucified on. Where’s the crown of thorns? Where’s his robe? Why did God create the Devil? Why did God give us the ability to be evil? Why would God allow us to go to Hell if human form on earth is not our real existence? It’s just plain crazy. Why is there more than one religion? Why is every war that has ever occurred based on religious differences? How come a ‘Good Guy’ who is forced to go to war to fight someone from a different background, or religious belief, why is that person condemned to that hell if he is someone who believes in God? Why are there many, many different religions? Shouldn’t there be only one God? It’s ridiculous to believe the idea that one god created us all. It’s ridiculous for the Jewish community to hate the Christian community. it’s ridiculous for the Christian community to hate the Islamic community. It’s ridiculous for the Islamic community to hate the Western World when according to the teachings of God we are all one and we should all be on the same side.
Organised religious communities are nothing more than very wealthy corporations profiting on the fear that you will go to hell if you don’t follow their rules.
- SCIENCE
Now, science loves to hate religion. It’s one of their favourite things to do, maybe. They can’t get enough of results, conclusions, answers to mathematical questions. Physics folk don’t believe in God because when they prayed for the winning lottery numbers God didn’t come through for them. Atheists are all about the Big Bang. 13.8 billion years ago for no reason what so ever some particles decided to change and create the universe we all live in today.
But physicists don’t have the answers. The theoretical physicists have theories. The experimental physicists only test them theories to determine whether the theory could be a correct theory based on an assumption.
We can’t see anything past the speed of light. In fact, as humans, all of our senses are limited. Our vision, our hearing, our smell, our taste and touch are all restricted. Other creatures with the same basic senses are way more advanced than us. We consider ourselves the most intelligent species, but that’s only by the way ‘We’ measure things. A cat doesn’t care about time, but when it’s what we call night time it’s vision is not impaired. A whale really doesn’t give a damn if you measure the distance to the next island in miles or kilometres. But the whale knows exactly how to get there and how long it will take him.
We don’t know why the universe began. We don’t know what’s outside of it. We don’t know what holds it together. The possibility of us as an intelligent life form existing is, in scientific language, ‘Unlikely’. That’s just a polite way of saying impossible without being impossible. Mathematics was created to describe the visible universe as a way of measuring and recording the data so we could make sense of it. But the universe doesn’t care about mathematics. This is just a system designed for human understanding.
There’s a lot of stuff that we don’t understand. Quantum physics, String theory, M theory, Metaphysics. The fact that the laws defining the Macroscopic Universe, the big stuff out there, these laws don’t work when you apply them to the Microscopic Universe, the Quantum world, the tiniest bits of matter.
The Big Bang event is as mysterious as God. Both seem to be illusive when we need a bit of definitive proof.
So what is the simulation theory? What does it mean?
Ok, think of yourself as a character in a Sims game. If you don’t know what The Sims are it’s basically a game where you create a world with people and buildings and trees and cars and all the things we have in real life. You then control what happens within this little world. There are some random events that happen and they have been generated by the computer program to mix things up a little.
Another way of describing it would be like the movie The Matrix. Now, if you haven’t seen the film it again portrays people inside a computer program. They think they are real, organic, but in reality they are just images of their own mind inside a program. So imagine that you are just data, a character inside a video game where you have the freedom to do what you want within the restrictions of your characters capability.
For example, if you were Mario, as in Super Mario. You can only run so fast, jump so high, no matter how much the person playing hits the controller.
So what I am suggesting here is that you, we, are all just computer programmed characters inside the same game. We have limits to what we can and can’t do and someone or something else is controlling us! Sound about right? I imagine then that this throws up a million questions followed by disbelief, frowning, a shrug of the shoulders and a head shake as if to say this is a joke. It’s a crap argument and I’m not interested, the Flat Earth is more believable.
Remember though, I wanted to keep it simple just to open your mind to the idea. I haven’t give any details yet, I just want you to understand that the idea this reality isn’t ‘Real’, is as plausible as the scientific or religious idea.
Look at the some of the things science and religion can’t answer. But, maybe the simulation argument can.
People who have come back and remembered?
Coincidences?
One particle affecting another particle?
Ghosts in the machines?
Intuition?
De ja vu?
Dreaming?
and my favourite…………………………. The Double Slit Experiment!
Just consider this for a moment. Todays computers are 200 trillion times more powerful than the first computers in the 1940’s. Imagine how powerful computers will be in 100 years from now? We can’t even imagine them. Now think what a computer will be able to do in one thousand years from now?
Is it possible that a computer one thousand years from now will be able to create a virtual reality that is indistinguishable from the ‘Real World’ as we know it with regards to its level of detail? The advances in technology today, involving interaction between the brain and computers is incredible. Using these modern programs people are able to type just by thinking. The technology already exists where thoughts can be transformed into physical actions to operate computer controlled devices.
One thing that the human has that computers don’t is the mind. How can a computer ever experience emotion if it does not have a mind? But the mind is something that divides scientists as to what exactly it is. Is is part of the brain or is it separate from the brain? If it’s part of the brain then it can be replicated by computers as technically it is nothing more than electrical signals generated by the brain to create feelings. This has never been proven and I suppose is very difficult to measure. How do you measure a thought?
But if it is separate from the brain, as Metaphysics suggests, then it allows the possibility that our mind is elsewhere even potentially outside of this universe or reality leading to the idea that this could be a simulated experience. I also don’t see any restrictions in computers obtaining a mind giving them the ability to experience emotions. Everything a computer knows is information gathered from people. All the data is available on the internet for a computer program to learn, and we have inputted every piece of information from personal, emotional experiences. An advanced computer program can learn, store and recover these ideas (thoughts) and use them at the most suited time. This would give the impression that the computer has thoughts and displays emotions that seem to be very human like.
All the computer is doing is choosing responses and creating a reaction using electrical signals. These reactions could be displayed on the faces of a simulated society for example giving the impression that the individuals in that society are thinking for themselves. Put all this technology together in a virtual reality and we would never know if we were real or not. Yes, we are real from our perspective, but there’s a craving to find out. An itch that won’t go away urging the need to find out the truth.
What are we and why are we here?
God? The Big Bang? or part of a simulation played out on computers of the future?
Well I can’t prove or disprove God, that requires belief. I also can’t prove that anything existed before the Big Bang and it was this event that created the universe and everything in it. This requires theory.
But being a simulated being? Something that has been created for the purpose of experiencing an experience and that my true form is elsewhere? Is it possible to find evidence that this option is what we are and why we are here? Well it would need the existence of the impossible, things happening that defy all logic and are ultimately not possible on this Earth and in this physical state.
If I could find things that have altered or are deemed impossible, glitches in the matrix for example, then this would surely outweigh the science and religious arguments. It wouldn’t necessarily explain where our true form is, but it would suggest that the world around us is indeed a program.
The search is on!
