Starting Over

We are given two choices in this world. The choice between Science and Religion.

Now before people start shouting stupid things, yes I realise Scientists can be religious and Religious people can be scientists. But what I’m talking about is your belief systems or theoretical understandings. The origins of where we come from as human beings. How the Earth was created and everything that lives upon it, and below it, or inside it? whatever, you know what I mean. Anyway, what I’m getting at is from an early age we are told it was either God or the Big Bang. That’s how it started and that’s why we are here now.

So I have a task, a challenge if you like. Fairly straight forward, should be easily achieved considering how developed we are now as a race. These are questions that should be answered in no time. Teach me something and help me understand. Complete the tasks below and show all workings out.

Oh yeah, nearly forgot. Treat this as if the year is 10BC. that’s about 2029 years ago. You are not allowed to use any existing data. These have to be experiments, calculations, tests or whatever you need to do to prove what I’m going to ask done today. As if nobody knows anything. You are the discoverers, like the world has forgotten everything we know and we are Starting Over.         

Science community first, answer the following and show how you got your answers;

Calculate the size of the Earth.                                                                                                           

Calculate the distance to the Sun.                                                                                                                 

Calculate the speed the Earth is spinning.

Easy, maybe too easy. Don’t forget you can’t use NASA or GPS or computers. Do it like they did back then. Ok, you can use techniques used around 500 years ago but that’s it science people. No modern technology.

Right, people of faith. Your task is much easier. I don’t care from what Religion you are a member, you have one simple question to answer, or task to complete I should say;

Prove God.

That’s it! Convince me there is a superior entity that created us all and everything we know. I use the name God as I am a westerner and that is the preferred name in these parts. Doesn’t have to be God, whoever the creator is in your belief system will do. Just show me the evidence to say “Oh, yeah, that’s the guy who built it all”. Ooops, am I allowed to say the “Guy” these days without offending someone??  Who cares, any way it must be a bloke because this world’s too fucked up for a “Gal” to be in charge!!  (thanks George Carlin)                                                                                 

As with the science questions, you can’t just thrust Religious text at me. Quoting the Bible for example is not evidence enough. None of that “he said she said” stuff.

Right, there you go. I expect by this time next week I will completely understand exactly where I come from and what I am living on and more importantly, exactly where I am in the universe. Can’t wait!!!
