Peter Higgs

Who is Peter Higgs, you maybe asking? Many people know exactly who Peter Ware Higgs is and how important he is to science. Specifically the world of physics and his theory on a certain particle. This particle has been called “the God Particle” by some.

Peter Higgs is a theoretical physicist from Newcastle, England. A multi award winning professor and Nobel Prize laureate for his work on the mass of subatomic particles.

crazy scientist

Now, to many of you, including me, this is science talk. A different language.                          What exactly is this guy famous for?… And he is Famous!                                                                         In simple terms for people like me, this is the man who had the idea that a particle exists that binds the universe together. There is a model that was put together by the worlds greatest physicists called “The Standard Model”.

This is the standard model. By the way, I am calling these scientists the greatest in the world because this is a model of the building blocks of our very universe. The only thing missing is Gravity. Why is gravity missing? You may ask?? That’s because even today no one has worked out exactly what gravity is. Oh yeah sure, we know it exists, we just can’t explain how!! or What!!

Anyway, as i was saying. This is a diagram of the standard model and the Big in the middle is the Higgs particle. Higgs Boson to be exact. Google Boson if you want to know that bit, I just want some recognition for Peter here.

I Googled Peter Higgs, actually i Googled Peter… then Peter H… then Peter Hi… only then did he show up on my search, IN 4th Place!! Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea how important the Higgs particle is?         No?       Never heard of it?

Google albe, that’s it, just albe, and the top result will be Albert Einstein. Quite an important fellow in our history. Mr albe was a theoretical physicist much in the same way Peter is. But what Peter has theorised has not only been tested, but Discovered!! via the Large Hadron Collider. Again, if you’re not sure what the LHC is look it up. In short it is a 17 mile, multi billion Euro, underground particle collider built by many of the worlds top scientists (except America), designed at discovering the Basic Laws of Nature. Also if you crash these particles together at near to light speed you Might! be able to see what happened following the Big Bang.

Anyway, back to my point. The discovery of the Higgs particle completes the theoretical jigsaw. Without it, “The Standard Model” does not work. It is incomplete. It’s not just a missing piece, it’s the Most Important piece! The glue that holds it altogether!!

So why then, are we not learning about Peter Higgs in schools? Why is Mr Higgs not classed either The, or at least one of The most important people in Human history? Without this particle, modern physics and our understanding of “What we are” and how we came into being, simply doesn’t make sense! The Higgs Particle, or God Particle is a really big thing.

Maybe.

You see, I have a small problem with these theories, they’re theories. Yes, I know that you need great thinkers to help push us into experiments. And them experiments may find results to explain stuff. But you need to understand there are two types of physicists, at least when it comes to understanding the Universe. There are Theoretical Physicists, and Experimental Physicists. The Theoretical Physicists, for various reasons, have an idea. Then the Experimental Physicists attempt to prove them right. They build machines to help prove these theories, and when they get close it is considered a success. If the LHC was built around the standard model, which is a Theory, and Higgs particle, a theory, was discovered by that theoretical instrument, using theoretical guidelines, and was only accurate to 99.99% which in the world of results is Not a Result, then what has been achieved?

I am not trying to discredit any one here by the way. I find the LHC fascinating, i would love to visit it. I enjoy the way scientists are opening up to the very idea that Mathematics may not be the way we understand our very existence. The Higgs particle should have have been 140Gev, then that changed to 115GeV. It was actually, well possibly, even maybe, discovered at 125GeV. Sorry, this is science language again. My point is Nothing has been discovered. Only the possibility that if this theoretical particle existed, this is where it might be!

These are the same people that tell you Black Holes actually exist. Really, ok, where? Where are they? Show Me, Show Us, we would love to see some actual evidence for once!!!
